Why try reusables?

If you’re reading this page, you might be wondering why it’s a good idea to use fabric nappies, when everyone in the Western world has been using disposable paper ones for the last 25 years. I know I did. Here’s why it’s cool again, or click HERE to see a video about the resurgence of cloth nappies

Style, darlings

When my little one is wearing a funky nappy with matching leggings, he gets mucho attention, which always goes down well with him. There’s no contest really: insipid white paper thing with optional Disney characters round the waistband, or fabulous fabric red polka dot /cow print/insert your own favourite pants here. We are stocking several new brands of super-stylish nappy that are exclusive to us, as we believe functional should be fabulous too.
Why use cloth

Wall-E and the landfill factor

Landfill is gross. If you’ve ever seen Wall-E, you’ll know what I mean. If Henry VIII had worn disposable nappies, they would still be breaking down in landfill site today. And then there’s the massive soup of plastic particles the size of Mexico swilling around in the Pacific. I know about that report saying there’s no difference in carbon footprint, and I used it as an excuse for ages too. But the real truth is: Wash your reusables sensibly and the carbon footprint is smaller than disposables too. And they won’t be rotting in landfill for 500 years either.

Why use cloth

Credit-crunch chic

When you think about it, it’s just not very *clever* to throw money away every time you change a nappy. Not when reusables are this easy and stylish. Sure, disposables have their place, but over the time your baby is in nappies you could save over £1000 by using real nappies, even including washing costs. Try our Nappy Calculator to see what we mean. Then you can chuck the savings at something a lot more fun, like a holiday. Or a pair of Loubs.

Why use cloth

Spotty botty

Disposables contain the super-absorbent gel, Sodium Polyacrylate. This has been banned for use in tampons due to its link with Toxic Shock Syndrome. The chemical reaction in disposables as the chemicals absorb moisture creates heat. Some people worry that this has been a factor in the rise in male infertility over the last 25 years. Incidences of nappy rash are vastly increased in the last 25 years, possibly due to parents not changing disposables as frequently as they should, or due to allergic reactions to the chemicals they contain. We’ll be looking into this more soon…
